Our Support To Farmers

Carters BulkHal - Our support to farmers.

The farming and agricultural industries play a critical role in New Zealand’s economy, culture and food security. New Zealand is a small country but our global agricultural reach is large.

Economy: It is estimated that around 40% of New Zealand’s exports are related to the agricultural industry, with this amount growing significantly in value annually. Furthermore the agriculture industry contributed roughly 11.1% to New Zealand’s Gross Domestic Product or (GDP) for the year ended 31 March 2020.

Food Security: Farming not only contributes significantly to our economy – the production of food for both local and overseas markets contributes to increased food security – a benefit to all New Zealanders.

It would be an understatement to note that the majority of Carters BulkHaul’s work is geared towards farming. Our trucks are all tailored to suit the variety of farms we visit and we operate 24/7 allowing for deliveries when required by our customers.

We prioritise our farming customers as we recognise the importance of on-time deliveries of palm kernel, blends and other related products which are critical to the efficient operation of farms and most importantly animal welfare. Our commitment to our values allows Carters BulkHaul to deliver a service we can be proud of.

Over the last decade we have invested in blower trucks, which allow for the delivery of palm kernel, fertiliser and blends into purpose built silos. These trucks can still operate as bulk trucks, increasingly their versatility and efficiency.

Our blower trucks are Freightliner Argosy’s which have been purpose built by Morgan Engineering in Whangarei. These trucks have blower unit’s attached to the chassis of the truck and trailer. The components for the blower unit sit neatly within the chassis of the truck and trailer, which make the truck almost indistinguishable from a typical bulk unit.

The Economics of HPMV's

Carters BulkHaul - The economics of HPMV's

High Productivity Motor Vehicles (HPMVs) have significant economic implications in New Zealand. HPMVs were introduced during 2010 where the NZ government passed legislation to allow for larger trucks. This can be referred to as trucks and trailers that exceed standard legal limits in terms of weight and/or dimensions while maintaining acceptable levels of safety and performance. Here are some key aspects regarding the economics of HPMVs in New Zealand:

Increased Efficiency: Our fleet of 50Max trucks offer higher load-carrying capacity enabling more goods to be transported in a single trip. This increased efficiency leads to reduced transportation costs which benefits both Carters BulkHaul and customers.

Competitiveness: 50Max trucks has enabled Carters BulkHaul to offer a competitive service on larger jobs. With the ability to move larger volumes of goods in a single trip, Carters BulkHaul can offer more competitive pricing and improve our job efficiency.

HPMVs offer Carters BulkHaul economic advantages in terms of increased efficiency, reducing variable transportation costs, capital expenditure and enhanced competitiveness.

The Importance of New Technology

The truck driving industry plays a critical role in various sectors of the New Zealand economy. The integration of new technology has brought about several important benefits. Here are some key points highlighting the importance of new technology in the truck driving industry:

Safety: New technologies, such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and collision avoidance systems, enhance safety on the roads. These technologies can alert drivers to potential hazards, assist in maintaining safe distances, and even initiate emergency braking if needed. Additionally, technologies like lane departure warning systems help reduce accidents caused by driver fatigue or distractions.

Efficiency and Productivity: Our new trucks have been ordered with an emphasis on efficiency. Technologies on our new Freightliner Cascadia Mercedes Benz Arocs are equipped with engine idle reduction systems and aerodynamic enhancements enhance fuel efficiency, having a positive impact on our bottom line and the environment.

Our trucks are all equipped with Navman GPS systems, enabling dispatchers to track the location of each individual truck.

Driver Comfort and Well-Being: We order top of the line trucks. Cab designs are becoming more ergonomic, with features such as adjustable seats, climate control, and improved sleeping bunks. All of our trucks are equipped with Bluetooth, stereos and electronic logbooks.

The Introduction of the Freightliner Cascadia…

Carters BulkHaul, Freightliner Cascadia.

The freightliner Argosy is a uniquely important truck in the New Zealand market, being one of the only cabover trucks offered by the America Market. Characterized by a low tare weight, 8x4 configuration and looks that have drawn a staunch follower base – the Freightliner Argosy has become a regular sight on the New Zealand roads.

The Freightliner Argosy while produced in the United States was built primarily for the export market, specifically the markets of New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. However, during 2014 Freightliner made the announcement that they would withdraw from the South African Market.

While the Argosy achieved great success in Australia and New Zealand – Freightliner announced during 2018 that the model would not be replaced, thus marking the end of an era for the Freightliner Argosy.

Truck 11 & the Final Freightliner Argosy We Received

Freightliner had lined up the immensely popular Cascadia as the replacement for the Argosy. While not the cab-over New Zealand has come to love, the Freightliner Cascadia has proven its success in the North American market, rising to the rank of the best-selling model. Slated to be introduced in 2020 the Cascadia has some big shoes to fill.

Safety:

One of the key benefits the Freightliner Cascadia offers Carters BulkHaul is safety improvements. Improvements relating to ABS, ESP, Seatbelt Pretensioner’s, Active Brake Assist, Lane Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control allow our drivers to operate in a safer environment and offer increased safety to other road users.

Euro 6 Standard:

Improvements relating to fuel efficiency were an added improvement of the Cascadia – with the Detroit DD16 engine meeting strict Euro 6 emissions standards. A more fuel-efficient truck was enticing for a transport company such as ourselves, of which a significant proportion of direct costs can be attributable to fuel expense.

While its the end of an era for the Freightliner Argosy – We are excited to see the future that the Freightliner Cascadia will bring.
